Our Story

In the early 1950s, Ted left his small Greek village of only a few dozen people to seek a better life. His brother had moved to Winnipeg a year earlier, so Ted followed with hopes of building a future of his own. Ted began working in local restaurants, learning the ins and outs of the food industry while his wife Freida, helped support their growing ambitions. Together, they shared a clear goal: to create something of their own that combined good food, hard work, and community.

After years of hard work, Ted saved enough money to open his own restaurant. In 1963, he opened Niakwa Pizza on Archibald Street in the Niakwa Park area of Winnipeg. He named the restaurant after the community that had given him his start. Ted had seen pizza in only a few places before, but he loved the idea of creating his own version. Ted and Freida spent countless hours developing their own crust and sauce, crafting a recipe that quickly became a favourite among locals.

As word spread, Niakwa Pizza expanded across Manitoba, reaching more than thirty locations by the '80s & '90s. From Winnipeg to rural towns across the province, people came to know Niakwa for its signature recipes and consistent quality.

Today, Niakwa Pizza continues to be guided by the same values that Ted and Freida established over sixty years ago. While the business has evolved and includes both family members and dedicated franchise owners, every location shares the same commitment to quality, community, and tradition.
